{food} pizzeria delfina…

Spending weekend afternoons in Dolores Park is one of my favourite things to do in San Francisco. The vibe is fun, people watching is prime and there are lots of good food options around for when hunger strikes. Amongst BiRite Market and Tartine Bakery, Pizzeria Delfina is less than a block away from the park.

Every other time we have attempted to try Pizzeria Delfina, the waitlist has been at least 8-10 parties deep. We got lucky this time and were seated right away.

Of course we ordered the Margherita pizza to not only knock it off the Big Eat list but also because my husband is a pizza purist- tomato and cheese is all he needs. The pie itself is quite expensive for the size, but decent to share amongst two people with an appetizer or side.

They offer additional herbs, spices and cheese to add onto your slice.

We opted against wine or beer and instead had some refreshing lemonade. So good on a warm afternoon.

{food} ton kiang dim sum…

It has been awhile since I’ve tackled the list! Ton Kiang’s dim sum has been a high priority for me to try. Growing up, my parents used to take us for Sunday brunch dim sum at least once a month. Unfortunately, my husband doesn’t love dim sum (apparently something about the texture of dumpling shells) so I don’t get my dim sum fix unless out of towners are visiting.

Dim sum is best in larger groups. I went to Ton Kiang with only one other person so we were a bit limited on the amount of dishes to order.

Standouts were the pork buns- regular and steamed. The BBQ pork marination is sweet and mixes well with the softness of the bread.

The dumplings were average. I guess there isn’t much one can do to switch up a traditional dumpling. I recommend getting the shrimp and scallop one if you are picking between choices.

Major Tip- Save room for dessert. Their doughnuts are unbelievable. A great combination of crusty, sugary outside and soft custard-like inside. I would come back for these alone.

{wedding wednesday} celebrating love…

We flew to Toronto last weekend to celebrate my sister’s recent engagement. She organized a lovely brunch at Archeo in the historic distillery district to bring together close family for the occasion.

We started with a champagne toast and some quick speeches from the husband and wife to-be.

Four beautiful, short centerpieces were placed along the tables. She chose delicate colours like lilac, pinks and whites in seasonal flowers. As a fun and delicious place card, macarons matching the centerpieces were placed on each plate.

Because Archeo is located in the distillery district, it is outfitted with original exposed brick and wood beams finishes. It had an authentic, rustic feel but was warmed up through lighting and modern design elements. Archeo is connected to its sister restaurant The Boiler House where the brunch was served. The two story tall bar and open concept were beautiful.

The food was fantastic but I was too busy eating to take pics. Can you believe that? Me being too busy to take pictures?! Standouts were definitely the custard tart and chocolate mousse desserts.

All in all, it was a perfect afternoon. Lots of laughs and love in the room.

{food} brunch at the moment…

Weekend brunches are one of our favourite things to do in San Francisco. I love the choice of breakfast or lunch, sweet or savoury and washing it all down with a spicy bloody mary.

Growing up in Canada, the closest thing to fried chicken I ever had was KFC. In the last couple of years, I have discovered my love for the fried chicken and waffle combo. I used to get my fix at Little Skillet. Their chicken is pretty darn tasty but the waffles are only so-so. They are take-out only, so there is no proper seating.

Cue Zero Zero and their skillet fried chicken thighs with semolina waffles topped with chestnut honey button, bacon and REAL maple syrup. Wow, just typing that makes me hungry. It is the perfection combination of salty and sweet with a touch of crispiness. The waffles don’t get soggy which is great for a slow eater like me. We normally order one dish of fried chicken and one margherita extra pizza (made with buffalo mozzerella) to share, but I usually end up eating all of the chicken myself!

The laid back lofty atmosphere of Zero Zero combined with great food makes it a perfect brunch spot.
