machine coffee and deli…

A recent office relocation has meant a lot more lunch hours for me in San Francisco’s mid-market district. With Twitter and Yammer’s somewhat recent move to the neighborhood, new restaurants have been popping up to keep up with new traffic.

I had been wanting to check out Machine Coffee and Deli since the Big Eat 2013 list had been released to try the ‘Crankshaft’ tuna melt. Of course I geeked out and did a little research before heading over. Machine Coffee and Deli is a small shopfront (blink and you’ll miss it!) by the people behind neighboring Show Dogs and Foreign Cinema. They serve Four Barrel coffee, breakfast goods and are known for their sandwiches.

It was a sunny Friday afternoon and I was craving some time in the sun. I ordered my Crankshaft tuna melt and the server said he would bring it over to me if I wanted to sit outside at Show Dogs. The sandwich was pretty heavy for lunch and I would definitely share it with someone if I go again. Not only was it a mayonaise based tuna salad, but there was cheese melted on both sides of the roll to tie it together. I liked the freshness of the arugula and the pickled bite of capers. If you are hungry and love tuna melts, go for it. A bit steep at $10 for the neighborhood but worth a try.

{food} ‘I Heart NY’ cookbook…

I have been collecting cookbooks for the last couple of years. Not only do I use them for their recipes (duh!) but also as design elements throughout the loft. There is nothing prettier than a shelf filled with your favourite cookbooks.

Daniel Humm and Will Guidera of three Michelin star Eleven Madison Park are releasing their second cookbook- ‘I Heart New York’. The book is “designed explicitly for the home cook” and an exploration into New York’s local ingredients, cuisine, and cocktail culture. There is no doubt there will be a level of pretenciosness from the James Beard award winning and Michelin star bearing Daniel Humm, but I am looking forward to experimenting with some challenging dishes.

Eater provided a first peek at some of the cookbook’s content, showcasing Francesco Tonelli’s photography.

‘I Heart New York’ comes out on April 9th and can be pre-ordered on Amazon. Can’t wait to add this one to my collection.

{food} craftsman & wolves…

The James Beard Foundation 2013 Restaurant and Chef semifinalists have been announced. San Francisco has some great nominees throughout the list, including pastry chef William Werner from Craftsman & Wolves. I loved visiting Tell Tale Preserves’ stand (Werner’s previous pop up patisserie) at the Ferry Building Farmer’s Market and am so glad that he has found the perfect permanent space for C&W.

The Rebel Within is THE standout item at C&W. It is a cheese, green onion and sausage breakfast muffin with a soft boiled egg in the center. The hype around this muffin is real. It is as good as it looks. It costs a steep $7 but is worth a try at least once. And it’s on the Big Eat 2013 list.

The large glass display case makes it impossible to leave without grabbing a couple of other treats. I had to restrict myself but couldn’t leave without a Valhorna chocolate chip cookie with sea salt sprinkled on top. In contrast to the $7 breakfast muffin, a $2 large cookie seemed like a bargain.

{food} deli board…

Deli Board has become our favourite Saturday lunch spot. Their sandwiches are perfect to share between two, their Board sauce is deliciously addictive and they have the BEST deli pickles on the side.

Last Saturday, we ordered the Boca sandwich since it was listed on this year’s Big Eat list. Boca has corned beef, pastrami, brisket, muenster cheese, Board sauce, brown mustard, pickles, all on a french roll. It did not disappoint.

I recommend eating it right away. The gooey cheesiness is optimal when still piping hot.Deli Board, San Francisco | sparklingandsweet.com

There is always a line at Deli Board, but the sandwiches usually come within ten minutes of ordering. They have daily specials so be sure to check out the board before ordering. A couple of weeks ago, we took a chance on the daily special Wazbinski sandwich— turkey, kosher salami, cream cheese, muenster cheese, cherry peppers, pickled onion, 1000 island, brown mustard, all on dutch crunch. I am now stalking the board to see when it will be featured again!
